چکیده

Fjelde et a!. (9) observed that D-glucosamine inhibited the growth of human epidermoid carcinoma cells in tissue culture, with concentration of 1 mg/mI causing death of the cells within 24 hr. The i.p. administration of divided doses of D-glucosamine or 2-deoxy-D-glucose inhibited the growth of Walker 256 carcinosarcoma in rats without significant toxicity to the host (1). Tumor growth resumed when treatment was stopped and slowed when treatment was reinstituted. Glucosamine in vivo exerted a cytotoxic effect on the Yoshida rat ascites sarcoma; in vitro, it inhibited anaerobic glycolysis of the tumor (16). Woodward et a!. (32) have shown that D-glucosamine inhibits the growth of yeast cells. Ely et aL (8) reported that D-glucosamine and 2-deoxy-D-glucose inhibited the growth of embryonic chicken heart in tissue culture without altering cell viability. Rubin et a!. (26) showed that D-glucosamine, but not N-acetylglucosamine, caused degeneration of Sarcoma 37

DNA polymerases of Walker 256 carcinosarcoma.

Walker 256 carcinosarcoma in rats has been a useful tu mor for the evaluation of potential chemotherapeutic agents. Recently, several compounds with proven antiviral activity were also shown to inhibit the growth of Walker 256 carcinosarcoma, suggesting the possibility that an oncogenic virus, through a mechanism such as recruitment, for example, might be an essential factor for the growth of t...

Incorporation of canavanine into protein of Walker carcinosarcoma 256 cells cultured in vitro.

The inhibitory effect of canavanine on the growth of Walker carcinosarcoma ~56 cells in vitro was described in a previous report (9). Apparently, the inhibition rested in a competitive interference of canavanine with the utilization of arginine. A number of recent reports have demonstrated that certain amino acid analogs--e.g., ethionine (6, 10, ~ , ~6), p-fluorophenylalanine (2, 17, 9.~5), fl-...

EFFECTS OF SERUM AND PROTEIN SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS ON POLYMORPHONUCLEAR NEUTROPHIL APOPTOSIS

In this study the programmed cell death (apoptosis) of human neutrophilic granulocytes was investigated in the presence and absence of fetal calf serum (FCS), cycloheximide and actinomycin-D. The results show that when FCS is omitted from cultures, apart from a decrease in viability, the percentage of apoptotic cells and DNA fragmentation increases. Apoptosis is accelerated in serum withdra...

Corticosteroids and transaminase activity. III. A relationship between changes in alanine transaminase activity and the growth of Walker carcinosarcoma 256.

The effects of treatment with cortisol on the growth and alanine-a-ketoglutarate transaminase 1 activity of Walker carcinosarcoma 256 were studied. Similarly, the effects of other conditions known to enhance gluconeogenic activity, such as diabetes, fasting, and high protein intake, were investigated. Each of these conditions was previously shown to be associated with elevated activity of alani...
